Electricity Street - Crewe 1936

Please respect the copyright of these photos ©

Staff lined up for a photograph in front of the electricity offices in Electricity Street, Crewe, 1936.
This 'office' was built before the war for the Crewe Corporation Electricity Dept. and was adjacent to the steam-driven power station - DC of course!

At first thought to be taken in 1947 when Manweb was formed, along with all the other Area Boards? However in April 2020 it was found to be much earlier as this information indicates:- In this collection (Harold Shingler) was another picture taken outside to Electricity Street office that I sent you ages ago and it is already on the site. However this copy now has a date on the back ! 2nd December 1936 ! So you will have to alter the caption with my original suggestion (1947) which is clearly wrong. No wonder we can’t recognise any of the men. This picture says. 2nd row, seated. 4th from left Ernie Younger, 6th from left Harold Shingler.

My first day working for Manweb started in this office in 1964 when I commenced training as a Student Apprentice.

The office was vacated by Manweb in about 1967 when the District staff moved to a new, purpose built depot on Macon Way, Crewe.
The old office in the picture is now used as a mosque!
